West Malling & Sole Street

Comparison

Whilst in general these two designs look very much different, West Malling being the more elaborate of the pair, there are some similarities which proves the same company (LC&DR) has influenced both. The most prominent of these are the single-storey sideways extensions, both with pitched roofs perpendicular to the main structure, and both with a single chimney stack. Indeed, the buildings at the two stations have four chimney stacks on their main section, but a third prominent aspect of the pair refers again to the general layout: note that their ends are both finished off with a large, two-storey pitched-roof section, the former residence of the Station Master. Gabled roofs, identically-patterned canopy valances and the same style of window frames reveals that these two buildings have more in common than at first glance. Also worthy of observation are the chimney stacks; those on the two-storey sections of the station buildings are, excepting the variation in brick colour, identical in design.
