Strood

25th February 2006

The connection with the line to Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham is just seen branching sharply

off to the left, whilst the Medway Valley Line to Maidstone and Paddock Wood continues straight

on under the viaduct. Two sidings were formerly situated behind the ''45'' MPH sign. This southward

view dates from 25th February 2006. David Glasspool

11th March 2004

On 11th March 2004, the spur from Strood is seen joining the ''Chatham'' main line immediately

before the tracks cross the SER-built lattice-girder Medway bridge. This bridge dates from the

SER's endeavour to reach Rochester and Chatham, after failing in gaining running rights over

the LC&DR lines. The SER branch to 'Chatham Central' (misleadingly in Rochester) was closed

on 1st October 1911, but this bridge was retained and the main 'Chatham' line slewed onto it.

Thereafter, it carried all rail traffic and the original LC&DR was subsequently removed.

This view from 25th February 2006 better shows the lattice metalwork, as the train shown on

the previous page trundles over towards Rochester: next stop Sittingbourne. David Glasspool
