Grain Crossing

A westward view on 13th May 2006 reveals another semaphore ''home'' signal, and a huge oil
drum on the right. Out of view, beyond the bend still survives an operational ''distant'' semaphore
signal, despite the whole area having been controlled by the Ashford Panel since 2001. David Glasspool

A 24th April 2006 view shows the same semaphore arm seen in the previous picture, this time
looking like it is amongst the reeds. David Glasspool

Here is the aforementioned ''distant'' semaphore, situated just to the west of the ''home'' signal
seen in the previous picture. It is seen on 13th May 2006, construction work being evident on
the far right. David Glasspool

Flood barriers are an interesting feature of this quaint, marshy route, having been installed in
response to the East Coast floods of 31st January 1953 (during which Ridham Dock was severely
damaged). The example seen here on 13th May 2006 is positioned in-between the ''distant''
semaphore and Grain Crossing. One would expect the line across the Hoo Peninsula to be
as flat as a pancake, but there are a surprising number of gradients. David Glasspool
