Stone Crossing

Stone Crossing

A very rural scene on 7th September 2004 as a view towards Dartford shows the station flanked

by impressive rows of trees. Behind the row of trees on the right is 'Crossways' business park,

alongside the Thames, where development of land into business units has rocketed. The land to

the left (south) of the station has seen a rather different series of events. Whilst a new, small

housing estate has appeared, most of the area consists of rolling green hills, mixed with brown

field sites which have now become wastelands. The station in this view remains in Network

SouthEast livery, and the white waiting shelters can just be seen on the platforms. David Glasspool

Stone Crossing

The station's namesake is pictured here on a hot 2nd May 2004. The crossing is still manually

worked by the gatekeeper who resides in the former signal box. To the left of the main gate is

the pedestrian walkway and this gate can be automatically locked from the former signal box

when a train is approaching. The next nearest manual crossing on the line is located at Hoo

Junction, but until recently another manual crossing existed on the Dartford loop line, allowing

passage to the centrally-located farm. David Glasspool

The 16th April 2007 provided weather akin to a Summer's day. Thus, when Stone Crossing

was depicted in this view, the night temperature was remarkably warm for the time of year.

This eastward view reveals the SER-designed signal box, which appeared to have reclaimed

its Network SouthEast sign. David Glasspool

General Station Review

Originally opened: 2nd November 1908

Level of originality: The first wooden structure at the location is non-existent. However, the originality of the Southern Region establishment is very good. Changes include the addition of lamp posts on the platforms and the installation of colour signalling. All other major structures still survive.

General Condition: Former signal box in very good refurbished condition. Platform shelters in good solid condition, although their windows are now blocked up. Platforms remain solid, although patch-up repairs are noticeable.
