Deal

Deal

In the background of this view is Deal's signal box, also known as the  ''glasshouse'' owning to its

Southern Railway architecture. I have been made aware that the example here is a rarity, thus if

in the area, well worth a visit. Behind the semaphore signal remains evidence of sidings, now long

disused. David Glasspool

Semaphore signals also remain in place just to the south of Deal station, as this view from 25th February

2006 shows. The locomotive is ''Battle of Britain'' Class No. 34067 ''Tangmere'' and it is hauling the

''Granville Express'' circular tour of Kent. David Glasspool

General Station Review

Originally opened: 1st July 1847

Level of originality: Fairly good. The original terminus building remains, but is now devoid of overall roof. The ''up'' side buildings, opened with the through route, have since been demolished. Original Southern Railway canopy valance replaced by BR corrugated metal in early 1970s. Lattice footbridge still in evidence, its length being somewhat unusual among the type. A rare Southern Railway "glasshouse" signal box still features to the north of the layout, beyond level crossing.

General Condition: Main building in fair condition, although on last visit, footbridge desperately required a new coat of paint. Palisade fencing has been installed.
